The rollout of two, potentially three vaccines in the U.S., has raised many questions for both adults and keiki about vaccines, these vaccines’ safety and the distribution process. While the vaccine is not offered for children at this time, children have questions regarding the vaccine and how it affects their family members. Communicating the complexity of the situation with children can be tricky, especially since all of the answers are not known. However, public health officials can extrapolate answers from previous vaccine experience and provide a level of certainty on some of the issues. Keiki Heroes asked the Hawai‘i Department of Health to answer questions raised by both children and adults that pertain to Hawai‘i’s vaccine situation.
For keiki questions, we encourage you to review the video series produced by Keiki Heroes. This video series presents information to keiki in an understandable and engaging format. Each question is asked by a child in our community, which provides children a safe environment to ask questions and internalize that they are not alone in their experience. We’ve included a pertinent question regarding the COVID-19 vaccine in the video series and provided additional Frequently Asked Questions about vaccinations to help children understand complexities involved with this situation and the vaccination rollout. You can expect these to be updated as more information becomes available.
In order to answer these questions, we’ve conducted extensive research and consulted with public officials who inform public policy. We encourage you to use these COVID-19 resources for your own supplemental information.
