“Taking Care of Myself” official Keiki Heroes Music Video!

Keiki Heroes is so excited to share our new music video, made with community submissions from across Hawaiʻi Island, for local artist Jennie Kaneshiro’s “Taking Care of Myself.” The song was written for the Keiki Heroes program, promoting aloha and lōkahi to help keiki through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This video captured the essence of our collective desire to come together in this great time of sacrifice, and especially during the holidays when the greatest gift is connecting with those you love,” said Franny Legge, producer and Keiki Heroes volunteer. “We saw keiki, kupuna, first responders and talented musicians sing together in spirit, and the result is endlessly touching.”

Keiki Heroes invited submissions through social media and word-of-mouth throughout Hawaiʻi Island communities; families from across the island responded with home recordings that were edited together to create the final video. Community participants were joined by the Hawaiʻi Fire Department, Hawaiʻi Police Department and nurses at the Hilo Medical Center to share the common chorus: “I take care of my community by taking care of myself.”

“The main message of the song is for our keiki to have a basic understanding of some good healthy practices to keep themselves safe,” said Jennie Kaneshiro, Big Island musician and songwriter for this project. “We are taking care of our kupuna, our friends, our family around us by taking care of ourselves.”

We are full of gratitude for all those who participated in creating this wonderful project – your voices, ideas, and commitment to our community have built a video that is uplifting, heartwarming and instills a sense of hope for our local keiki and families navigating these challenging times.
